San diego refugee forum

The San Diego Refugee Forum is a professional association of organizations that advocates serving all populations fleeing persecution and seeking refuge in San Diego. Its members include resettlement agencies, ethnic community-based organizations, employment services, government agencies, community-based groups, refugees, advocates, educators, and supporting individuals. Members paying annual dues are entitled to vote in elections of Forum officers. Their membership enhances the Forum's standing to advocate on behalf of refugees, asylees and asylum seekers.

The San Diego Refugee Forum meets monthly to exchange information and advocate on issues of concern to the community of people displaced by war and violent conflict who are making a new life in San Diego. The meetings host guest speakers and provide a forum for discussion of topics of interest. They also provide government agencies with an opportunity to convey information and obtain input on policy issues relevant to the refugee community. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month (excluding December).

                  World Refugee Day 2025

This year's San Diego Refugee Forum's World Refugee Day Celebration was a wonderful success. We had seven honorees this year for the 2025 Refugee Resilience Award, all of whom have exhibited strength, leadership, and a commitment to their refugee communities.

I encourage you to visit our website over the next few weeks to see their stories and view photos of the event.

This year's event was a little different but brought together agencies and organizations that serve our refugee community as members of the San Diego Refugee Forum. Grossmont Healthcare District welcomed us in their beautiful boardroom and Molina Healthcare, World Relief So. California- San Diego, and Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego were sponsors of the event. The event opened with a reception with entertainment by Monica Yousif on the harp and concluded with a beautiful cultural dance led by the youth of the Karen Organization of San Diego, longtime members of the San Diego Refugee Forum. Congresswoman Sara Jacob's office was represented along with Assmaa Elyaat, Deputy Director Self-Sufficiency Services, Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs with the County of San Diego and Amy Abrams, Chief Community Health Officer with Grossmont Healthcare District. The highlight of the event were the inspirational stories delivered by each of the honorees. Each one shared a story of their individual journey marked by the trauma of arriving in a new country and all that it entails.  Along the way they faced many obstacles, hardships and uncertainty of their new lives. They have shown great courage and resilience.

We want to congratulate all of the awardees and thank all of those who nominated them, served on the planning committee, and who attended to support these deserving individuals.
